The Real Prize

This month was Max's final Pinewood Derby Race. He and Mitch worked for hours and hours to build the perfect Pinewood Derby car. Max named it "Super Speed" and it did not disappoint. His last two Pinewood Derbys were in Colorado and the set up there was very low key. Just how low key we didn't know until we attended the Pinewood Derby in Chandler Arizona.

We realized we were not in Kansas anymore.

The track had an electronic start, a photo finish cam with instant replay, the times were displayed in actual time and also converted to MPH and there were 3 scientific looking guys with laptops monitoring each race (maybe they were really on Youtube but they looked very official).

Notice one of the two screens up in the top of this picture displaying stats and showing instant replays.

The ward winners advanced to a Stake race! Wow, we didn't get to do that in Colorado!

The Pinewood Derby has been a fun part of Cub Scouts for Max. And I know it's not every man's thing, but woodworking and attention to detail certainly are among Mitch's many talents and will hopefully be a hobby that Max will carry on. I felt so much joy watching my two boys work on the Derby car together and I know that winning the race is fun, but the time they spent together is the real prize. I am so grateful that Max has such a wonderful father!
